Yuzen of Surf

Takuji Masuda. 2006. Japan. 27 min.

Former Japanese surfing champion, Takuji Masuda is invited by the oldest existing maison de couture, Chiso, to make an exhibition based on their hand dying technique "Yuzen".

Masuda created a dialog between the western and the eastern artisans using hand dying silk fabric, surfboards and aloha shirts as the medium.

Souzaemon Nishimura XV of Chiso challenges to surf with Masuda along with the previous collaborator, a celebrated fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto.

It is a saga of robing fashion culture and unrobing surf culture going through a changing of times. Directed and narrated by Takuji Masuda in 2006, but never released officially.
